WP5 focuses on developing a sophisticated flight simulator for space missions to support the implementation and validation of Machine Learning (ML) algorithms for onboard operations. The simulator will model a virtual spacecraft capable of performing realistic spaceflight and measurement operations, simulating data collection similar to real missions using a range of analysis tools. These tools include the FIELDS, PLASMA, and VEPSA suites, which simulate magnetic fields, plasma characteristics, and energetic particle trajectories, respectively.
The validation process combines synthetic measurements with past mission data, particularly from missions like ESA/CLUSTER, NASA/MMS, ESA/Solar Orbiter, and NASA/Parker Solar Probe. This will help assess and refine ML algorithms for VDF analysis and scientific region identification in space. The results will provide critical feedback for optimizing ML algorithms, ensuring they are ready for in-flight use. WP5 will release the flight simulator and its suites in Python, making them accessible for public use and further development.
